Abstract

AI in Orthodontics: what’s up and what’s next?

by Federici Canova Fabio

Artificial Intelligence is strongly revolutionizing modern orthodontics, improving diagnostic efficiency and treatment planning. Advanced algorithms can analyze large amounts of clinical data, x-ray images and photographs, helping us to accurately identify malocclusions and other dental anomalies. Among the main advantages of AI in orthodontics, we find the personalization of treatments. AI systems can develop customized treatment plans, based on predictive simulations of tooth movement. This not only increases the accuracy of the results, but also reduces the overall treatment time. Furthermore, AI facilitates remote patient monitoring, allowing problems to be detected in real time and solved quickly. However, adopting AI requires significant investments in time and resources for implementation and staff training. Additionally, there is a risk of over-reliance on technology, which could lead to a reduction in core clinical skills. Finally, ethical issues related to the management of patient data are crucial and must be addressed carefully. AI therefore represents an extraordinary opportunity for orthodontics, improving the precision and efficiency of treatments. However, it is essential to balance technological benefits with the preservation of clinical skills and compliance with ethical regulations.
