Abstract

What Comes First: Braces, Aligners or TMJ Treatments?

by Bono Andrea Erica

I will present the maneuvers to recognize Temporomandibular Disorders signs and symptoms before Orthodontic or Aligner treatment. I will explain the use of TENS Transcutaneus Electrical Neural Stimulation, to evaluate and recover the right muscle length position and how to build the neurophysiological orthotic to treat the pathological TMJ. The bite registration technique and the orthotic indication will be discussed. The second phase will be presented with Overlay’s compensation and its combination with braces or aligners. I will present the steps to treat a patient with TMD, the relaxation with TENS, the neurophysiological orthotic, the achievements with the treatment and the second phase with aligners. The accurate attachments to use with overlays, and the necessary images to evaluate the evolution of the patients with these disorders. The aim of the lecture will be to understand the meaning of “TMJ First Orthodontic”, assessing that the TMJ is a fundamental pillar for the occlusion .
