Joint Baccetti Lecture: The Orthodontic Education Landscape: Pivoting the Past, Projecting the Future!

In the dynamic realm of orthodontics, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment where innovation and tradition converge. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and fostering collaboration, we are not just redefining patient care; we are transforming the landscape of research and education. Now is the time to lead with vision, adapt with agility, and innovate with purpose. This lecture will provide a powerful overview of the current educational landscape through the lens of educators and outline the roadmaps leading us into a promising future. We will explore how emerging technologies and next-generation discoveries are set to revolutionize personalized orthodontic treatment. While AI and deep learning will introduce intelligent machines capable of realizing our most ambitious dreams, they will not replace experienced orthodontists. Groundbreaking research in biology and genetics will further transform our diagnostic and treatment capabilities. Advances in pharmacological, non-invasive slow-release applications of bioagents will enable us to modulate the speed of tooth movement by affecting bone turnover. Simple saliva tests to identify new genetic markers will allow us to assess the risk of developing anomalies, such as impacted teeth, and complications, such as root resorption. This will facilitate proactive interventions to avoid or mitigate the severity of anomalies and tailor treatments to minimize side effects based on genetic profiles. Never in the history of the world have generational changes occurred at such a rapid pace. The digital revolution has transformed our lives in every aspect, leading to significant generational clashes. The orthodontic workforce in the current year is predominantly composed of millennials, over 75% of practitioners, who are expected to build upon the clinical outcomes established by the previous generation (Generation X) and enhance them with greater diagnostic precision. How can Generation X and millennials collaborate to ensure the maintenance and improvement of clinical outcomes rather than let their differences lead to conflict? What technological advances really enhanced clinical outcomes and which are lagging behind? What responsibilities do we hold as we pass the baton to the future generation? Let us share ideas to chart a course toward the future of our profession.
